Aftercare and Advice on Electrical Products

Gardens and Homes Direct advises the following with regard to the use of electrical items in the home:-

  • Do not expose indoor items to the elements and ensure they are always used in a dry, damp-free environment.
  • Always locate the transformer attached to outdoor products in a dry, damp-free environment. We recommend the Rain Safe product to protect your plugs outdoors.
  • If an item is fitted with a transformer it must only be used with the transformer provided.
  • Electrical Christmas products are to be used for decoration only. Do not allow children to use as a toy. Keep out of reach of small children.
  • Always switch off decorative lights overnight or if left unattended.
  • Do not operate products while still in the packaging.
  • Never use mains powered equipment near water.
  • Do not submerge items or cables on outdoor items.
  • Never allow electric products to come into contact with a source of heat or flame.
  • Do not put too high a fuse in plugs. Be aware of fuses which blow frequently.
  • Do not connect electrical items directly to other electrical products.
  • Once the flex of an item is damaged it must not be used and should be destroyed.
  • Do not exceed the recommended bulb wattage for light fittings.
  • Replace failed lamps immediately with lamps of the same rated voltage and wattage to prevent overheating. Do not replace lamps whilst connected to the power supply.
  • If an appliance appears faulty stop using it and have it checked at once.
  • Never overload an electric socket or extension lead.
  • Do not keep extension cables coiled as they may overheat.
  • Do not leave power leads where they can be tripped over or near a source of water.
  • Do not use appliances with worn or damaged flexes. Do not wire flexes together.
  • Be aware of plugs or wall sockets which are overheating or are scorched or cracked.
  • Be aware of cables or wires which are loose, exposed or fraying.
  • Be aware of a burning smell when appliances are switched on.
  • Make sure that your home has smoke alarms fitted and that they are all in working order.
